The general rule is that admission into the United States of a foreign national – not in possession of a valid visa – is prohibited. There are few exceptions to this general rule. One exception is the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) allowing millions of visitors 90 days or less in the United States. Specifically, the VWP waives the requirement of a valid nonimmigrant visa for business (B-1) or pleasure (B-2). The Attorney General, in consultation with the Secretary of State, must authorize the waiver. VWP entrants may not change or extend their nonimmigrant status. Possession of a roundtrip ticket is required. Currently, only nationals of 27 countries are eligible.
